The eye masks for sleep are a great help to get some good quality sleep time for those times when we can’t easily sleep. I cannot vouch for more for most of these highly affordable bedside accessories and wished I had known and used them a lot earlier. They probably would have saved me a whole lot of fidgeting and insomnia.
Although it is not apparent at first, the sleep masks quickly put your body in the sleep mode after you put them on your eyes. There are those that come together with a pair of earplugs and these earplugs further isolate you from the outside ambiance around you where you are trying to sleep, and it comes in very handy when you find yourself trying to sleep in a noisy area.
When we go to sleep, what actually happens is that our human body shuts itself off from the real world, so when you put on a sleep mask, you are actually trying to help your system to shut off one of the five senses. Having your eyes surrounded by the total darkness makes sure that it can be shut down completely.
To explain further in this regard, the experts say that the eyes are strongly connected to the sleep. At the back of the eye, there is retina which receives the light and transmits signals to the negligence of the brain that controls the automatic functions of our body such as sleeping and sweating, to name a few. This part of the brain is the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus, in turn, can be connected to the pineal gland, that is the endocrine gland which is responsible for making melatonin, the sleep hormone.
When you put on a sleep mask, it tricks the hypothalamus into telling the pineal gland to produce melatonin, which, in turn, induces sleep. The light entering the eye, on the other hand, triggers the stoppage of melatonin product for the reason that it signals ‘daytime’ for the body. So as you can speculate, the sleep masks are really useful in inducing sleep.
There are a lot of types of sleep masks with different designs and even those that come with special scents. A sleep mask comes in handy for all those situations where you require sleep but need to shut out the light completely.
